Maite Urteaga to turn pro with Laboral Kutxa
The Spanish Women’s Pro Team with strong Basque foundations, Laboral Kutxa – Fundación Euskadi, has secured the signature of Maite Urteaga. After only starting her cycling career in 2024, the 25-years-old Basque rider has impressed a lot with her quick improvement. In the beginning of July, Urteaga ones again proved her talent and strength, by ending second in the general classification of the Volta a Portugal. This was only a week after her impressive ride at the Spanish national championships, where her very long solo ride just didn’t make it to the finish, after which she still ended sixth.
“For me it is a dream come true that I am becoming a professional cyclist next year”, Maite says. “And I am very happy to do so with Laboral Kutxa. It is a team that I know already for a longer time, with a strong Basque identity. I also already know a lot of the people, as I have joined them on training camps and last season in one race as a stagiaire. So you can say that this feels like coming home for me. On the other hand, I am leaving another home, my club team Eulen-Amenabar, who have supported me from the start of my career and to who I am very grateful.”
The choice to join Laboral Kutxa – Fundación Euskadi was one by heart, but it wasn’t necessarily an easy one. Urteaga: “This season has been a good one for me so far. And after a second place in the GP Eibar, several wins in national races and then my performances at nationals and in Portugal, I had several teams reaching out to me and my agent, Aschwin of AK Sportpromotions. For me this was a whole new thing and I am very happy with their guidance in the whole process, talking to all teams and making the right choice. Now I look very much forward to the rest of the season and of course the upcoming years with Laboral Kutxa.”
